Many hospitals and surgical centers adopted the use of Rotomat automated vertical carousels for:

  • Patient records
  • Radiology
  • Pathology samples
  • Hospital pharmacies
  • Laundry facilities

More recently, the Rotomat has revolutionized the Sterile Processing Department for storage of surgical instruments in the SPD and the OR.

The Hänel Rotomat® allows for constant, accurate inventory control when integrated into existing hospital IT systems. This constant monitoring makes it virtually impossible for expiration dates to go unnoticed or for supplies to run out without warning. The storage containers inside of the Hänel Rotomat® are designed so items cannot be stacked on top of one another, preventing items from becoming buried.

The Hänel Rotomat® can effectively safeguard sensitive materials with locking mechanisms and access code entry.

For hospital administrative purposes, the Hänel Rotomat® office carousel is an efficient, safeguarded system for storing important patient files, consent forms, and more. The Hänel Rotomat® office carousel is ergonomically friendly and can be enhanced with features such as fire protection, access points on multiple floors, and can adapted to be used by the disabled.

John Muir Medical Center Uses Hänel Vertical Storage in the SPD

SPD Storage System Muir Hospital

John Muir Medical Center faced a crisis with their central Sterile Processing Department (SPD).  Wire carts were not supplying enough storage capacity to meet increasing demands, not to mention consuming a large footprint in the SPD.  John Muir was facing a $1.2 million facility expansion including new construction and relocation of the SPD to serve the needs of the OR department.

John Muir was able to avoid the cost and lost time associated with new construction by turning to Hänel. The SPD was equipped with 10 new Hänel Rotomat Vertical Carousels.

By storing vertically, the Rotomat utilizes the available room height from floor to ceiling.  Items are brought to the user, eliminating the need to search for items on carts somewhere spread around the SPD.  Case carts are picked very quickly and accurately each time with the push of a button.  The high density storage of surgical instruments, implants, disposables and other inventory are now stored in 12 Rotomats in a state of the art Sterile Processing Department.
